You might consider buying an external WiFi antenna, depending upon the model of your Wifi Card. Even CompUSA sells one. This lets your latop pick up networks at longer ranges.
If you're just looking to extend the range of the signal for your own network (i.e. inside yout home of office) then you could just get a range booster like the D-Link DWL-G710 or Linksys WRE54G, which just sit somewhere within range of your existing router/access point, and amplify the signal. Great for getting the signal through walls, or between floors.

Add another access point, or make your aerial better, try adding a lentgh of copper wire to the aerial on your router. Make sure the copper touches the metal on the existing aerial. Try going for a 20 cm legth aimed at the direction you want to use your laptop.
Failing that you can use a pringles tube! Honest it works!
Look at the website below, it also gives other home made construction tips!

Hello, Linksys came out with a line of long range routers. I got the SR200 and it works great. They have SR400 as well, but I did not need a super long range one. Go to Linksys to find out more about it
