Van quit moving while being driven. I towed it home, it wouldn't go into any gear, after sitting for a week it will now go into forward or reverse but won't up shift in drive, it kicks out of gear at about 25 mph, if iI shut the engine off and restart it it will repeat this all day. Fluid level is fine, not burned. 3.8 V-6 w/Automatic OD , 178000 miles.

These are prone to transmission failure and I'm not criticizing Fords in general. The only cure is a rebuilt units, used ones are just as likely to have this issue. Nice to get 178,000 miles out of your Ford though.

Sounds like a problem with the pump or some restriction in the flow of the transmission fluid. Did you hit the oil pan by any chance?

passable intermediate or direct bands in the trans burned up or worn out.
