In the film there is a little boy who's mum dies but when his step dad tries to adopt him he finds out that his wife has been lying to him and things don't quite add up. The little boy has a red fire engine which is his favoutie toy.

I remember the movie, it is Deception: A Mother's Secret. It was a made for TV movie and I think it starred Steven Weber from Wings

I have seen that one I'm sure of it. You know the fire engine is his favourite toy as he carries it around alot and the camera closes in on it during distressing dialogue or something that we are left to imagine is happening without seeing it.
Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called, but it was out several years ago.
