Good question. They are probably farming for points and trying to get as much as they can really quickly. I agree with you that it is a waste and that a good chunk of people on here are anything but helpful. That's what the reporting system is for.

Maybe they don't know, not really sure if they are wasting time just to get points but either way they get a certain ammount of answers to reply so it would be their fault.

You kind of answered your own question- to get points! I actually get a lot of people saying "hi" and stuff like that, points aren't that important anyway! My goals are to get best answers, not just points!!

remember 'gaming for points' is a violation.
you get any answers like that or insults.. you can have their points rejected.
that has a satisfying feeling at times... do you do that? you should just to irritate them back since they're doing it to you.
