No, I certainly do not think that the sanctions have any effect, except to limit Cubans from better experiencing the "outside" world. If they had this experience, they would probably start another revolution and throw the "El Primo" out of office, although Castro is certainly no worse than the Commander in Thief that we have in the U.S. We only have our freedoms thanks to the Constitution, he certainly doesn't uphold freedom and liberty.

They serve a purpose, sure, but not a good purpose. We didn't like Cuba's socialist government, so we imposed sanctions. The effect of the sanctions was that the poor people were hurt, along with Cuba's economy, but the power structure remained unchanged. It is the same thing we did in Iraq -- due to sanctions, a million people died, but Saddam was still in power.

No, firstly looking at the ban on cuban exports meaning cigars.
The Customs Service seized only $1m of $76m worth of cigars brought into the US (USA today, unseized number estimate) that means that people can still get cigars they are just paying extra money to the smugglers and the goverment is losing our on customs duty. Cuba is still able to sell those cigars and is also able to selll cigars to every other country in the world so it doesnt hit them very much at that end.

More importantly however the sanctions give Castro an excuse for his countries failings, in true Communist fashion America is Trotsky, is Snowball, is the scapegoat for a dismal economy.

I believe American exports to cuba should be encouraged and not embargoed! only by showing cubans the wonders of open market capitalism will they look to abandon their shoddy system. 'The U.S. International Trade Commission estimates an ongoing annual loss to U.S. exporters of $1.2 billion' (Wikipedia).

Furthermore, Cuban tourism is booming as tourists from all over the world come to visit the qwerky backward country full of 1950's american cars. Some would stay for the sun, but this again goes against the aim of the sanctions, the weakening of the cuban economy.
Not to mention the estimated $1billion dollars in invisible exports to cuba from remittances from ex-pats in the US. If the country wasnt so dam poor they wouldnt need to give back as much

Just as democracy breeds free trade, free trade can breed democracy

They never did serve any purpose. All sanctions ever do is hurt the poor people. US governement frowns on Canadians who go there for vacation! They have always kept Fidel and Cuba down, yet at the same time have supported dozens of right wing dictatorships all over the world...One of the reasons people scratch their heads at US foreign policy.
