If you want the milk too, you need to find something to bore a hole with into the softer of the three holes. If you don't care about loosing the milk, put it into 3 overlapping plastic bags, and smash it hard on concrete. If you're strong it should only need one whack to break wide open. Good luck!

Take 2 shovels.... the pointed kind. Thrust one into the coconut, then take the other one and thrust it into the coconut with the shovels placed back to back. Then pry the shovels together. The husk will loosen and you can peel it off. Then, look at the three spots on the end of the nut. There will always be one that looks different from the other two. Take a knife and gently shave the nut at the different looking spot until you see white, then punch it through and drain the liquid into a glass. Don't throw away the liquid, you can drink that and it's delicious. Then take a hammer and gently tap the nut all over until it cracks open. After that you will have to pry the white part out. If you have tapped it thoroughly with the hammer, it should come apart easily.

Here in Barbados the locals use a machete and whack the top off to drain the coconut water into bottles for sale on the road side. Then, if the customer wants it, they will chop it in half and they can eat the "jelly" that - if left to ripen becomes the white coconut most of us are more famliar with.

best way to open a cocnut that is taken right from the tree is to get a native of the area to use his machette and cut the top off of it cleanly.. Then you can drink the "milk" and eat the flesh. Young coconuts are the best to eat this way.

Hammer and a chistle, 2 part shell to get to the meat, without tools it would be a pain, but Tom did it on a island so anyone with tools in the home or garage should be able to manage it just fine.
