The starting salary for a flight attendant varies between Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000 a month. In addition to that they also get discounted travel tickets and allowances.

Quality of flight attendants: It used to be that to be an Air India flight hostess was a career of great pride. They all used to be very beautiful and most of them were former Miss India's. Now, due to reservations quotas for minorties and backward castes, the quality of flight attendants has deteriorated. Often times, the selectors cannot select the most qualified flight attendant because they must select a certain number of backward caste candidates (akin to affirmative action in the US). A result is that the flight attendants are rude and not was well trained. I have had several experiences where the flight attendant made me feel like I was committing a crime by asking for another drink (this is in First Class and not coach). It is only when Indian VIP's are on board that the flight attendants actually treat passengers with respect. Event hen, many a flight has been delayed because of the airline's policy of waiting for VIP's.
