Please... gotta call your own plays! Of course this might mean picking up a book for a day, and getting the basics of football down pat.

Madden's calls aren't so great. It just recommends standard plays based upon your down & distance, and doesn't even factor in what your opponent is doing. For example, if it's fourth and two while you're on defense, Madden will recommend punt return formation, even if your opponent has already selected goal line and going for it instead of kicking!

In general, you want to surpise your opponent. Run when he's expecting you to pass, then pass when he isn't expecting that. To do this, you want to find a couple of formations where you can do both, and mix it up. If you never run from the shotgun, your opponent knows you're gonna throw it, as soon as you go into that formation.

use madden for some help if you need it to get in the right formation, but then try to pick a play around the one he picked, the offense that he picks is the best formation most of the time but the defense is automaticly picks to block that play, so if madden says to run, either pass or playmaker it.

for defense its a whole new story though, you need to take a couple games to just go through the defensive plays and remember where to get the blitzs and where to get covers,
don't ever pick the same play on defense, the cpu will pick up to it and pick a play that is to it's weak side. if all else fails, on defense if you only have a couple seconds left to pick a play though... ask madden, its not the best, but thats why ur controlling a guy right?

Pick your own plays, Madden's picks sometimes work best against the opposing teams offense, but not always.

Pick your own plays because the opponents will know which plays you picked if madden picks for you.
