Does anyone think a sincere letter to the poker site begging for 'an advance till I win it back' may do the trick?

Start small. Get a part-time job, build a bankroll and make it grow with solid, winning poker. Forget getting 'a hit'. You will only lose money bit by bit.
Study the game, get good and it will pay your living expenses and more. I make my living playing online poker. It's not impossible. You can't build a house without a good foundation. Nor would you 'get a hit' at surgery or flying a jet. You'd have to study and practise to succeed.
