Captain Malcolm Reynolds of the Firefly class transport vessel Serenity. Why? Because he isn't a hero, he's an anti-hero. He does things to protect himself and his crew, no-one else. He makes personal hard-choices, not galaxy wide ones like Kirk and Co.

Hi again, mini prophet.
My fave has to be Commander Powell of the starship 'Dark Star'
(Film Dark Star 1974), simply because he was dead.
But his brain was cryogenically frozen and wired up so that he could still give advice when called upon.
As he does when the crew have to disarm the talking bomb which wants to detonate itself,so Powell suggests using phenomenology to convince the bomb not to explode since what it can see may not actually be real. There then follows a terrific theosophical discussion between man and bomb.
I wont spoil the rest for you. Great film.

Zapp Brannigan from Futurama...

Zapp Brannigan is a 25 star General of the Democratic Order of Planets and has been responsible for several successful wars including a triumph of the pacifists of the Ghandi Nebula and his most famous - defeating the killbots in the octilian system.

Favourite question:- "Can't you ask a little more sexfully?"

Then there is the outstanding Ace Rimmer from Red Dwarf - what a guy!-
"Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast!"

I love Buck Rogers but I don't think he was an officer.

I like the Star Trek captain that was also in Quantum Leap.

Ya gotta love Galaxy Quest!!!!

I had to research it and it's worded weired up top - just keep in mind Tim Allens character name in the movie was Jason Nesmith, but the movie charcters name on the show Galaxy Quest was "Captain Taggert"...

Captain Archer. He is real, and has to deal with real issues. I like Kirk, but He was a little to dramatic and impulsive for me. Pichard was too sanitized and formal. Captain/Admiral Riker from the various time shift style episodes would be my second choice for the same reason.

Captain Pike from the original Star Trek. (He was before Captain Kirk.)

Jean-Luc Picard - because I love Patrick Stewart (and also don't know enough about Star Trek to comment on anybody else's character!)
