Very easy to do. I made one out of an old wooden picket fence 2 yrs ago and it's still holding up just fine. :-)

Really, any box you can make out of wood will work to some extent. It's best to leave openings (not too big) for air circulation to aid the composting process.

Four wooden pallets lashed together work great, and you can usually find a place that's happy to give them away.

wouldn't the wood break down eventually? I though that was the reason for the plastic ones?

I was just thinking after time and effort and materials, a pre-made plastic one may actually be more economical....
