Is it just me or is chivalry dead? There is no courtesy anymore. I include elderly people in this as i have found them to be as equally rude as younger people.Nobody looks out for anyone else any more.Do you agree or disagree?

Yes, I absolutely and totally agree. In fact, I think older people sometimes feel they have earned the right to be demanding just because they are old, and younger people feel respect is not something they should be expected to give out freely.

Sometimes dealing with rude and inconsiderated people can just really make you want to stay home and never come out again. I am so thankful for those who take the time and effort to think of others in their everyday activities. It makes life so much more enjoyable.

Actually I tend to disagree, but only to a point
Manners are becoming a thing of the past, but they haven't died out entirely
My kids have been taught to look somebody in the eyes when they say "hello", and they do.
I open doors for elderly people, and I stand back and let ladies go first. Judging by reactions I get, I feel that this is still appreciated, but isn't taken for granted.
I'm not alone in this, as the subject cropped up at home a while back, I stood and watched in the tube station and at the bus stop

I think most people are ok. People need to lighten up. I am more concerned that there is a right wing facist in the White House rather than the fact old people rarely open doors for me in shops. Society changes and although we no longer have any sense of community spirit we are still social animals and my community spirit is shared between my circle of friends. I have not got a clue who my neighbours are but who really cares. You may feel that there is no courtesy any more but it doesnt mean there are no good people out there.

There has always been a tendency for youth to shock some of the older people have not grown out of it it is true.

I think a lot of it is to do with a general acceptance or at least the lack of resources to make it so uncomfortable for the perpetrators that they think twice before being so rude.

The other aspect is that people think the world owes them a living, they have rights and they should be respected without earning it.

The fire is fuelled by political correctness.

Totally agree but there would not be enough room for the list of things that are wrong with modern society. I like to be a gentleman where possible and the number of times I have been chastised for it. Seems I am not politically correct. Thank God.

I totally agree. Think about this. The only way most of us ever learn our neighbor's name is if their mail is accidentally delivered to our house. Everyone is rude and everyone is angry. We live in the richest nation on Earth where even our poor have air conditioning and automobiles yet if you accidentally make eye contact with someone all of a sudden it is "What the fck are you looking at?" Why is everyone so mad? Why are fast food workers so rude? I do not feel comfortable eating food prepared by someone who does not know me but seems to already hate my guts.

I do somewhat agree.
When I go out I do all that I can to be kind. Even from people who are not being kind back.
I hold doors, say excuse me and just try to make eye contact with people and smile for no reason.
You never know what someone is going through and a smile could make a difference.

we live in a competitive society caused by the industrialisation of the west and predominance of capitalism therefore we strive to maintain our own goals and let others deal with their own. This is good in many ways but an effect of this is the fact that you have all the negative effects of any competition you only have to watch a football match to see the negative effect that competition has; whilst the competitive nature has lead to a greater level of skill the need to be the greatest causes negative effect as we can't all be the greatest. Now imagine that that football pitch is in fact your life and you may find it is not that much different from the football pitch, except in real life you dont get paid astronomical rates for a mediocre skill (in terms of constructiveness).

I agree, although I doubt this a new phenomenon. I always do my up most to be polite and considerate to others even if I don't get the same in return.
