I like epic story lines (Lord of the Rings was an easy read for me) the bigger and more detailed the universe the better, while still focusing on a limited number of fully rounded main characters, and a long-term story that actually goes somewhere, not just a "bad guy of the week" that gets clobbered and that's it.

Oh, and good art. Greg Land is one of my favorite artists, especially when he partners with Justin Ponsor as colorist.
Not asking too much, am I?

Examples of really, really good series: Bone, Sojourn, Meridian, Ruse, El Cazador. The last 4 are from a now-defunct publisher- CrossGen.

I don't know that there'll be a huge consensus among female comic book fans...

I imagine that it would not be too different from anyone else really, good writing and excellent illustrations! I guess I like a comic book with a really twisted/dark sense of humour, something quite subversive with characters that are not overly perfect with flaws and vulnerabilities (especially if the character is a superhero). My favourite character is Joe Pineapples (a cross-dressing robot) from the 2000AD/ABC Warriors series.

Don't know if this really answers your question, because it really is about what I look for in comic books... but I'm a girl and I read comic books... ;-)

Go to a comic convention and ask the female attendees, they will be glad to let you know. They know what they like.
