The best way to replace them is with vinyl replacement windows. Pella makes a good replacement window. So does Relia-bilt and American. Take off the inside piece of trim around the window sash. Remove the lower sash. Take out the intermediate trim and remove the upper sash. Slide the vinyl replacement window into place and fasten with screws provided. Caulk around edge. Replace inside trim. If you do wish to replace the sashes with wooden windows you will have to measure the size and order the replacement sashes to fit.
