It's time to sue.
No, seriously, that is unacceptable behavior in the workplace or anywhere else. Even if you don't find a new job, you need to get that situation resolved. Then sue.

Were there any witnesses? This doesn't impact what you should do, just how much of a response you need to push for.
First step would be to tell him (as if you should have to!) that was not acceptable and then 2nd is to go to HR (or whomever would fill that role in your company)- i.e the most senior person in the company besides your boss. If your spouse hit you that would be unacceptable. If your boss does (the fact that he missed is not relevant), that is so far beyond unacceptable that he should thank you for not pressing criminal charges!
He is a huge legal liability to the company- so you are doing the company a favor by reporting him. It is also an issue of self-respect- nobody should be able to treat you that way and/or be so clueless as to think it's okay.
It's only unfortunate that you waited this long to report it- but don't wait any longer.
Should you look for a new job? Not sure how big your company is- but I would say see if the issue can be addressed internally. The company has an obligation (legally and ethically) to fix this so you don't have to look for a new job.
If you're in a one-man shop (i.e it's you and your boss) then, yes, look for another job. But do talk to him and make it clear that he crossed a line and has to make this up to you in the meantime. If he overreacts- talk to him a second time via an attorney. It's not about going to court, it's about sending a message.
Good luck! But do something now!!!

If you work for a corporation you need to call your HR department or your boss' boss. Whomever you are more comfortable with. I have a bunch of employees and it is never acceptable to throw things in their presence. Be reasonable and logical when you do complain about it. If you start throwing in extraneous junk you are not likely to be taken very seriously. If you work for a small business then it is time to look for a new job. If you decide to look for a new job be very honest in your exit interview about why you are leaving. It is the only way the company can correct the behavior of your boss.

That is a completely hostile work environment!
You need to speak to someone in human resources, if you are considering looking for another job b/c of this, if you are afraid to go to work then you need to take action. Your bosses just can't throw books and things at you and expect it to be ok. That is completely wrong. There are laws to protect you and you have rights. I wouldn't go fly off the handle and sue, b/c frivilous law suits are way out of control and there are alternate ways to handle the situation. If you like your job then do something from the inside if you don't then look elsewhere but don't do it out of fear....

Did it hit you? That could be assault and battery.
Did anyone else see this happen? This probably is not the first time your boss has done something like this to someone.
You should not have to work somewhere where you feel physically threatened. You may want to talk to a lawyer. You may have grounds to sue the company.

Definitely time for some stress management courses in your company.
How has your boss reacted since? Is it contrite, apologetic, abusive, in denial? If his behavior is unpredictable, you are working in a volatile, hostile and dangerous environment.
Go to his supervisor immediately. If there isn't one, you must find a way to make sure this never happens again. Or that you are never alone with him or in a position you could become threatened.
Protect yourself and be prepared to leave immediately. Be prepared to report him to the police, if he threatens you physically; to the BBB if customers could be harmed; or to a federal agency if it applies.

That's below the belt. Start sending your resume and application lettter to other companies.
Your boss might experience a worse stuff (maybe, an entire volume of an encyclopedia) thrown at him/her. It's a bad thought but should not have done that, anyway.

I would go talk to your human resources department...there must be some underlying problem..I wouldn;t say you should be put out and need to look for a good job maybe it's time your boss got fired if they are going to be abusive and unproffessional.

Is your company a corporation? If so call HR immediately! You do not have to put up with abuse! If your boss is doing it to you he/she is probably doing it to others. The company could be in big trouble if someone got hurt. They will need a paper trail when they take action.

Get OUT! and Sue or take it up to the higher authorities for sure. That is not allowed. They do that stuff all the time in the movie biz, but no none reports it because it is the nature of the biz and that is just a poor excuse...definatly take it up to a higher authority!
