Many wireless cards (PCMCIA/PCI) use their own software for wireless detection. Check to see if this is the case. If it is, this would be a reason why your system will not run its wirless detection, becuase another application has been installed to manage it for the card.

Go to network settings under Start >> Settings or under control panel and then right click on the wireless network and select enable. Well that's one thing it could be. There could be many other problems. If that doesn't work you may want to try a power cycle with your wireless router.

1) Right-click on "My network places"
2) Right-click on the appropriate network adapter
3) Select "Enable"

If it's already enabled, also note that most laptops have key sequences to enable/disable network cards to save the battery. It might be your case too.
