The 16" deep ones are called CRT (for CathoRay Tube). They use electron guns that shoot the picture onto the monitor screen. Have been around since the 1950's. Invented for television.
The thin ones are new technology, using eithe LCD (liquid Crystal Display) or Plasma screen. They cost 3-4 times as much as the older CRT monitors. Have only been around for about 5 years. Just becoming popular in the last couple of years.

CRT is the big one. LCD/Plasma is the thin flat monitor.
Go for LCD. Plasma doesn't last long.

Space.
A flat screen saves space on your desk.
That's why I like it.
I don't get too technical, just practical.
That alone makes it worth it to have a flat screen.
