No, usually a Superior version of a program can managing the request for the old version and adds this the basic functions are the same
sure you cannot use the newest characteristics of the messengers but the basic like messaging and chatting are the same.

no, you will still see all your contact list but if you want to add new ones from (MSN) windows live messenger they need the most up to date messanger too ans vis versa if a friend of your with the windows live add you to theirs they will be able to contact you now.
However both are still very new so you are where I and waitng for all my friend ot keep up and get the new messangers.
