It seems people here are missing just exactly what your question asks. It didn't ask why do Americans feel the need to destroy the world or why do Americans destroy the world. It asks why do we feel the need to have the ability to do so. That's a very valid question since, last I checked, we have enough WMDs to destroy the world 300+ times over. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. I saw a graph the other day that showed that 48% of the world's military spending is done by the US. This seems very extreme to me. I mean, seriously, 48%?!?!? That's asinine when you look at our schools, our environment, people living in the streets, kids going hungry, and situations like the one in NOLA. We definitely have our priorities screwed up.

I don't know.....maybe we Americans are just naturally defensive - again, just look at some of these answers - and, apparently, we feel the need to go to extremes.

We are trying to save it. For lack of a better way to describe it, we can keep our nuclear pants on, but we can guarantee that not every nation in the world can.

After a certain number of nations have nuclear technology, then one of them must use it aggressively. That is tacit permission for the rest to use it aggressively. That could "destroy" the world.

After WWII when we had "the bomb" and Russia didnt, we could have take over. We could have just nuked moscow and taken over. We didnt. That is a counter-example to your blanket statement that "americans feel the need". Mathematically speaking, your global statement is invalidated. All you can do at this time is start negotiating limited statements under that, but its a losing battle based on ignorance.

There are a couple of reasonable ideas that were and are necessary to make the american economy, culture, and society work. One of them is that, in general, other people tend to be decent, honorable people. Another is that being a decent, honorable, reasonable person is good idea.

You could try exercising that and see if you are willing to take a totally different set of risks. Those risks tend to have much higher personal, cultural, and economic pay-offs that make them worthwhile. You should take a look at it.

Our over inflated sense of importance. America feels that only their way is the right way.We want to have everyone under our control, we lie, manipulate, destroy countries all in the name of chasing oil.We install dictators who brutally kill people and are okay with this, until they see us for what we are and then we destory them.

Americans do NOT feel we need the ability to destroy the world. We just feel we need a bigger Boom to protect ourselves from those who keep trying to attack us !!!!!! And to help others who are being attacked.

Because some people just don't know how to act like a loving person. It means, not just Americans, there is also other countries where they need to stop the insanity.

Can we all just get along!!

I don't think Americans feel that way. Americans feel we have the authority to tell other countries how to run theirs!!! And you know what, the bullshi*!! Our leaders are no different than any other previous dictators!

We don't. We are ready to stop anyone else who might have such an idea. The problem is we get the blame when some tinhorn dictator starts acting up. He goes nuts and we have to bow and scrape to him. You've got it bassackwards, kid.
