I know exactly what you mean. My wife and I live in Indiana, but she originally came from Michigan and had a driver's license from there with her old last name from her first marriage. When we went to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to get her an Indiana license, we thought it sufficient to show them her Michigan license and our marriage certificate. The BMV needed another form of ID, so we had to get her birth certificate, which has her maiden name. (Her Social Security card wasn't acceptable!) Even with these IDs it still wasn't enough as they needed to see her marriage license and divorce decree from her first marriage!
Not having those items, we decided to bypass that and get her a passport for additional identification. Her passport application was processed without any problems showing her current married name. (I have to wonder if the federal government is really secure now.) Returning to the BMV, her passport was acceptable in lieu of her birth certificate, but they printed her old married name! Dumb!
I used to wonder why going to the BMV (or DMV) was a pain. Now I know why. Yeesh!

I so cant stand going to the DMV. THey say you can make an apptoinment and that will go faster. But that is so not true. I hate it with a passion. What sucks is by the end of the year Im moving and have to get a new drivers liscens for that state and they want everything so you can get one. It sucks!!!!!!

My experience with a lot of government workers have always been bad. And yes, customer service is non-existent at DMV. My feeling is that they know we need them therefore they come up with all sort of ways to make it harder for us.
