I and my 24-year old girlfriend were in restaurant. She was chewing a gum. She told me that to swallow a chewing gum isn't dangerous at all because it goes in her stomach and then comes out and laughed. Then she took her chewing gum back to her throat and made a gulp and swallowed her chewing gum. The gum slided down her throat and was gone . . . She told me that she swallowed her gum whole, it was in her stomach and couldn't feel anymore. She laughed and said that the chewing gum is in her tummy now. She told me not to worry about it and added that she likes to swallow cherry pits and sometimes when she is on a lazy mood and don't want to take a cherry pit out she simply swallows it and sends to her stomach so there is no need to find a place for a cherry pit . . . She even don't have a stomachache . . .What will happen to the chewing gum or the cherry pit in my girlfriend's stomach? How much time will it be harmlessly in her tummy? When will she begin gigesting it?

Chewing gum is made up of the gum itself (called gum resin), preservatives, flavorings, and sweeteners. The human body is unable to digest the gum resin. But swallowed gum does not stay in the stomach or cause intestinal problems. That's because our bodies move most materials that can't be digested (like gum) through the digestive system and out of our bodies in a bowel movement.

In very rare cases, swallowing a large mass of gum, or many small pieces of gum over a short period of time, can block the digestive tract. Blockages in the digestive system are most likely to happen when gum is swallowed along with other non-digestible things (like sunflower seed hulls).

Although people cannot digest gum resin, we can digest the things that have been added to chewing gum, such as sweeteners or even medications (think of the nicotine gum used by people trying to quit smoking). The body absorbs these just through the act of chewing. This is where chewing gum can affect a person's health: When a person chews a lot of sugary gum, the calories can really add up.

Sugary gum also can lead to tooth decay and may damage dental work, like fillings. That's why dentists recommend people chew sugar-free gum, and then only one or two pieces a day. But even this has its downside: Chewing too much sugar-free gum that's been sweetened with an ingredient called sorbitol can give a person diarrhea. And too much cinnamon-flavored gum can irritate the lining of the mouth.

In very small doses, the human digestive tract is capable of breaking down plant cyanides into harmless compounds. Accidental ingestion of a single apple seed or cherry pit, therefore, though NOT recommended, is unlikely to cause any serious trouble.
However, larger doses cause anxiety, confusion, dizziness, headaches & vomiting. In severe poisoning, breathing difficulty; increased blood pressure and heart rate; and kidney failure are follwed by coma & convulsions. Death may then occur rapidly from respiratory arrest.

You may hear lots of stories about gum -- "takes 7 years to digest", "Don't ever swallow, it plugs up your system"
Total NONSENSE. It will pass through your system in just a day or two, EXACTLY THE SAME AS ANYTHING ELSE! Don't pay any attention to these ridiculous old wives' tales! Swallowing gum is far better than spitting it out on the ground where it gets stuck to your shoes! (Hate that!!)

As already noted, cherry pits contain a compound that produces cyanide when digested, so it's not advisable to swallow them. One or two probably won't be harmful, but best not to make a habit of it.

Pips are designed to pass throught the insides of animals (including humans) thats what the fruit is for, so an animal eats it and the pip then craps it out far away from the tree somewhere away from the tree it came from......they will do your girlfriend no harm.......gum shouldnt be so bad either, as long as she isnt eating and swallowing hoards of it she will be fine, it will all come out the other end (just be glad its not bubble gum!!!! lol)

Gum will not harm her. I don't chew gum anymore, because I found it gave me headaches, but as a kid I generally swallowed it rather than throwing it out, and it never made me sick.

As for cherry pits, they're probably fairly safe as well, but I'm sure they're harder to digest than gum, so I would advise against swallowing them.

I hope she will pass them out regularly. Encourage her not to swallow gum though, my grandmother told me it was bad for my health.
