The moon revolves around the earth. An interesting fact is that the moon revolves around the earth in such a way that the same side always faces the earth. Just like our earth moon has day and night. The day on the earth lasts about 12 hours. But the day on the moon lasts about 15 earth days. During the fullmoon we are looking at the side of the moon when it is completely illuminated by sunlight. The next day a part of the side we face is plunged into darkness and everyday that area of darkness increases and when the side we face is completely on the other side of the sun we donot see the moon. The moon is there but no light is reflected to us and we donot see the moon. That is the no moon day.

When the suns rays falls on earth, the earth's shadow falls back on the moon, if the shadow of the earth completely covers the face of the moon then, the moon is invisible, if the shadow dont fall on the moon at all, then you can see full moon because the sun's light shines directly into it...
The moon's appearances change as it keeps circling the earth.
Hope that helps.

If I understand this question, I believe it is the effect caused by the shadow of the earth as the moon travels around us compared to the sun.

Because the earth is in between the moon and the sun. There's half moons, crescent moons, etc, becuase sometimes the moon is in Earth's shadow. That's all there is to it. The shadow on the moon is from the Earth.

exactly one half of the moon is always illuminated by the sun. When moon is between earth and sun, we see darker (night) part of moon (no/new moon day). when earth is between sun and moon we see illuminated part day part of moon (full moon day)
