I have an 01 bonneville and a code recenlty came up about my transmission. My mechanic ( who I work with ) says it could run forever the way it is or it could eventually give out. To fix it would cost me at least 2 grand. What should I do? I would love to just get a new car but I still owe a good chunk on the one I'm driving plus I really cant afford to fix it right now.

As long as it isn't causing you trouble just now, I'd just keep driving it, making sure to check the fluid regularly and do a fluid/filter change when necessary.

I would like to know exactly what "code" this is, and EXACTLY what is supposedly wrong. $2000 sounds like the cost of a rebuild... that's a pretty pricey "fix" for something that may "run forever" or eventually give out. You might want to take the car elsewhere for a second opinion.

I'd be tempted to go to Auto Zone or some similar place and have them read the code (or codes), and find out exactly what it means.

If this guy's right and it does eventually go out, you have less expensive options, including getting a used tranny at a salvage yard for $300-400...some of these places even have the facilities to install the part for you (at a reasonable rate).

Hope this info helped.

If you still owe money on a car you think could poop out on you and cost MORE $$ I would get rid of it before it does! If you sell it yourself you will make more $$ than what a dealership would give you.

What was your mechanic's advice? Since you work with him you can probably trust his advice.

I would drive it untill it dies and look for a used transmisson. You could most likely find one for 200 bucks and then a few 100 in labor to have it put in.
