We also live in the "middle of nowhere" and we also have a herd of about 20 or so deer that frequent our fields. Many of our neighbours put out deer feed that can be purchased at you local farm supply store and even some garden supply stores. Some people also collect "HEALTHY" kitchen leftovers like lettuce, apples etc...and place them in their feeding stations. Saltlicks are also a favorite.
Be warned though, once you start to feed them they learn to rely on your supply of food and you cant just stop!
Also, if you like gardening...remember that deer like gardens. All of our neighbours have given up on pretty flowers in their yards because the deer come in and eat them all. Even a fenced garden is not safe.
One neighbour had 200 tulips eaten in just one morning...LOL
All of these people are dedicated to the local deer, if you start to feed them PLEASE be dedicated as well.
Have fun and enjoy their beauty...we do!

I am a hunter, lol, look at my pic...I find that corn works best!
The deer in the pic with me is a 10 point buck with 2 droptwines. And yes, I used an AK-47 to get him...he was delicious!

I have horses so I have hay also, and during one winter, some years ago, we left some hay for the deers to eat it. Since then they come every year!
First they were coming only during the winter, but now we can see them every day very early in the morning, grazing around our house and stables...

It's been my experience that deer love nuts of all kinds (hickory, hazel, walnuts, acorns, etc.), feed corn and sweet feed, fruits like apples, pears and grapes, and assorted vegetables (carrots, rhubarb, spinach, kale, mustard greens, brocoli, calliflower, etc.)...all of this along with its daily staples of hay, alfalfa and wild grasses, plant seedlings, fresh water and a salt lick would be heaven on earth for them and they'll NEVER wanna leave.

Good luck and enjoy your beautiful and friendly neighbors!

Just enjoy them. They must feel safe around your home. They don't need you to feed them and it is not right to do so. You do not want to draw them into populated areas or make them feel it is safe to be around humans. Many people are very irritated at deer who eat their landscape plants and won't appreciate your drawing them into your neighborhood.

Put corn out for them, and the best thing to keep em is to put out a salt lick as well. You can get a salt lick at a tractor supply or farm equiptment outlet.

Get a bag of feed for them at the Farm Supply store. And, you can throw out a bale of hay for them. I hope you are not wanting to get them to stay around your home for hunting season.

i think by feeding them you don't know what the end result can be unless you live in the countrybut if you live in or near city limits i would not feed them....i know you think your doing good but really its more harm...
