What is the 'dark' color you mention? If it is gold, it could be a palomino: http://www.palominohba.com/ . Rocky Mountain horses commonly have a color called chocolate dapple with a flaxen mane & tail that looks like this: http://www.thegaitedhorse.com/rocky_mountain.htm (see 2nd picture on page) - is that what you mean? It would not likely be this breed in Europe (as it is a US breed just gaining in popularity here), but it could be that color in another breed.

I see others have answered with "Palomino". If the horse is a golden color with a blonde mane and tail, then this is true. It sounded to me that you were referring to a darker colored body with the blonde/lighter mane and tail. In this case I believe you are referring to a color called "sorrel" (SORE-uhl). It is very beautiful when the contrast between the body and the mane and tail are drastic!

If it's "dark" it's probably not a palimino, they are fairly light. A "blonde" main and tail probably just means it's a chestnut with a flaxen main and tail. It is more dominant in some breeds than others. It's common in Appaloosas and can be seen in Quarter Horses and Paints, of course. It really can occur in a lot of breeds, it's just a color variety.

A Chocolate Palomino. Rocky Mountain Horses exhibit the same coat color as Icelandics, which are chocolate palominos. Check'em out. :)

There are several breeds that have this coloration.
I have not heard of one specific name for it.
Many horses are a dark chocolate color with light mane and tail.
My firend owns a chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail.
I like the chocolate color myself. It is unusual and I think it is pretty.

chocolate palameno, or silver dilution maybe. silver dilutions sounds like what you said so i think thats what it is. and the pic was of a regular horse so if its the same thing other horses can have the same color as the ice land horses. go to google and type in " horse color explained book website" and click on " brindle horses- a rare equine coat color". thats a really good website. sorry i dont know how to make it a link.

Rocky Mountain Horse. No thoroughbreds. People have no clue what they are talking about when they say Thoroughbred. It may also be a Icelandic. If it is small! lol

A dun or buckskin that's greying, possibly? with out photograph, that's totally complicated to wisely be certain what colour he could be. do you realize what colors his sire and dam have been? that would help. Black (blue) roan or Grulla (black dun) would not be "tan" because of the fact neither of those horses might have purple on them everywhere.
