I have a vegetable garden in my new home that is overgrown with weeds about 3 foot tall. I would like to kill what's in there now, as there is also fencing and other garbage under the weeds. Would this ruin the soil for re-planting in the spring, or should I be OK after the winter? note- there will be snow on the ground over winter.

depends on what chemical you sprayed, different weed killers have different times that you will need to wait.

If you use "Roundup" it will not harm the soil and you can replant after the weeds have died.
Other weed killers may neutralize the soil for a period of several months or even a year or more.
I recommend "Roundup." I would apply it now and again in about a month as new plants will come up after the first kill off.

Check the label of the product you are using!! The label will tell you when you can replant. Some herbicides allow you to replant hours or days after an application, others you may have to wait longer. Again, the label of the product you used will tell you everything you need to know.

depends on the killer you use. With some, you can plant the next day, with others, you cant plant anything for an entire year. Best thing to do is read the label. All vegitation killers ive ever seen tell you how long you have to wait before you can plant again.

I think you'll be fine. Most vegetation killers are absorbed through the leaves. Personally I prefer to not use chemicals and would use elbow grease and physically remove the weeds.
