I live in a small town with a lot of small stores. When a developer came to town years ago and wanted to put a regional mall in an empty corner of the town the local small-business owners who were on the town council vetoed that saying it would be bad for their businesses. Of course the developer built in the next town and now that town is getting a lot of sales tax revenue as well as most of the customers from this town.

The reason is obvious - small stores charge more, partially because they can and partially because their expenses are so high that they must. If a small store in this town would barter for TV sets that would be nice but that is pretty rare.

If I forget something important and want to get it quickly I go to a local small store. Otherwise I go to a big store for the lower prices. If I was a charitable organization I would spend my money on keeping small stores going. Since I am not I spend it on keeping myself going.

A small store is usually a family owned business whereas a large store is a cooperation. My husband and I go to a small appliance store for most of our stuff. He even traded some computer work for a 52' LCD T.V. Can't get a deal like that in a large store. We also would Rather give our money to keep a family in business than give it to people who really don't need it to survive.

Oh yes. The quality is great and the service is excellent. They come right to your door, and don't charge you anything for delivery. We also bought a washer and a deep freezer from the same company and it was unbelievable how smooth the transaction was. We even have a three year warranty with them for all three of the items. Yes English is my first language and I also studied Spanish and German. I am not so good at those, but I gave it my best shot.

If you would like more help with English, I would glad to assist you. My email is gin_jackson@yahoo.com. Contact me with any questions that you may have. I did home school for the last two years in high school, so I still have my English books.

I love language and am pleased that you asked for assistance. If I were listening to you in person I would be impressed. It is strange to present thoughts in another's language, and you are so very clear. My only suggestion could be to put the words this way (shorter and still making the point):

"Do you prefer shopping at a large or a small store, and why?" But your style is conversational and friendly, not dry like this one I made.

Myself, when I can afford to, I much prefer to support a small business because I feel resentment toward the large 'chain stores'. I support the effort of individuals to have their own business, where the heart of the human has more influence in the way everything is done.

Thank you for asking for suggestions, this was fun.

I live in California.
