So, he really shouldn't be able to, but they usually say he can control and manipulate anything metallic. Also, can he manipulate mercury amalgam fillings? That would be a really good way to torture someone.

No, he's not supposed to be able to manipulate aluminum. But the comic book writers conveniently ignore this to write exciting stories.

Look up diamagnetism, ferromagnetism and paramagnetism. There are different things that can happen, but ordinary magnetism doesn't affect aluminum.

The theory is that Magneto has such incredible magnetism, that he is able to achieve paramagnetic and diamagnetic effects. But, in order for him to do that, he would have to have the magnetic field of a neutron star! And that is so powerful his own powers should kill him! And microwave anybody within a hundred miles of him.

But, hey, it's just a comic book. Don't worry. Hey, things can be worse. Imagine if Cyclops' blasts came out of his ears, instead! He'd have to keep his ruby-quartz earmuffs on all the time or risk destroying things!

Magneto manipulates "magnetic fields", among other energy fields, so he probably could manipulate aluminium. He is able to manipulate energy around himself to create a protective force field, so he can, pretty much, control anything...
