it's a U that represents "union" of two sets (IE all points in both sets)

upside down U = intersection of two sets (IE points that are in both sets)

It means "union". If you have a set, C, that's composed of the union of A and B (A U B), then anything that's in either A or B is in C. You can think of the "U" as an 'or', while the inverted "U" is an 'and' (anything that belongs to both sets, not just one of the sets).
