You'll need a photo editor with an "edgefinder" tool. Photoshop is not the only one with a good edgefinder - Microsoft Picture It! 9 has a good one - just select the area near the edge of the object and it will select the contours of the item on the foreground - then go to "select inverse" which will select just the background - then go to "cut" to remove the background

Try Paint.net and The Gimp. The Gimp is the hardest to learn so get the manual.
Both these programs use layers and they're both legal freeware.. You need to open the photo and save as a copy so you don't lose the original.
You select the area you want to change and paint it white. You can use the Lassoo tool to draw around the area. It might take a bit of practice so be patient.
Remember to use the Help manuals if youget completely stuck or come back on here!

You can even use paint. It will take some time, but you just need to erase the background or paint it white.

For "simple" things like removing background, adding text, etc. you can usually do it in paint. It just takes a little time.

Adobe photoshop is the best, and not to hard to use. I'd offer to do it for you, but you probably don't want someonelse looking at your pics!
