i know of a similar trick that goes something like this, hope it helps.......... the 'magician' asks the person a series of questions, and then asks them to write down the answer, and at the same time they write something down too. the magician asks the person to screw up the paper so he/she cant see it and they do the same thing - after that, the magician asks the person what their answer was and shrugs to some effect, this goes on for a few questions (as many as you want)... the last question though has to have only two possible answers, for example - "do you prefer cats or dogs?". after that the magician asks the person to reveal their answers from the first to the last, and hey presto, the magician has the same! the secret is that after asking the first question, the magician has actually guessed the answer to the last question (in this case cats or dogs) and after asking what the answer to the first question was, writes that down after asking the second question and so on the person has actually given away the answers........ the only question they could get wrong is the last one but there's a 50/50 chance either way.. hope this helps and didnt bore you to death on the way

Real magicians are not allowed to give out how tricks are done, but this is an example of mentalism.
Mentalism is a branch of magic that does tricks that pretend to read or influence your mind, or that pretend to use the mind to move things, etc.
The trick you describe can be done in a hundred diferent ways- the less elegant ways include the idea that the 'volunteer' is a stooge, or that someone in the audience is a stooge and is signalling the info.
Big name psychics and faith healers actually have people on radios talking to a hidden earpeice, passing info back and forth- but this is probably not what is happening here.
OK, for the house-hold level trick, we can still do it a hundred ways:
1. The old take a number, add this to it, divide by this bit. There are several variations of this bit, and if the magi finds out one o fthe numbers, they can figure out the starter number.
2. Different ways to read the slip of paper- from adding it to a pile of other pieces and still locating it, to ways to rip it up and glimpse the answer desired, to using a gimmick in the pad that is basically a carbon copy.
3. They even make trick pens that can signal what they have written!
4. Pre-knowledge is powerful. There are a lot of ways to find things out, then pretend to reveal it later.
5. Smart guessing is even cooler. This is what a lot of the TV psychics do- make guesses that sound far-fetched, but are statistically likely in a group. The more knowledgeable the magi is, the better this works. There is an interesting phenomena amongst the audience that forgives misses and remembers hits as being brilliant.
Good mentalism is a lot of fun- and a lot harder to make work than it might seem.
If your memory is hazy on it, you will probably never find the answer you want- a good magi had you looking in the wrong place when the important things happened, so it is really unlikely you remember any detail that would be really helpful.

Another method employed by some "solo mentalists'' as they are called, makes use of a small sponge wet with pure alcohol and palmed. The questions are written on pieces of paper, which are not folded but are inserted in blank envelopes and sealed before being given to the performer. After the performer has collected the envelopes, all he has to do is lightly wet the face of the envelope with the alcohol. This has the effect of making the envelope temporarily transparent at that spot and he can easily read the words or questions written on the paper inside. The alcohol dries rapidly and the envelopes may be returned to the audience, seemingly undamaged in any way. A sense of the dramatic improves the effect of this trick, as is true with all mind-reading performances.
Other methods call for trick boxes, or trick watches, or trick apparatus of any sort that permits the performer to look at what has been written after it has been concealed from him, or, on the other hand, to know in advance, what will be written. These feats of mind-reading, performed by a single individual, are also frequently called 'clairvoyancy', clairvoyant being a French word meaning "seeing clearly".

There is a trick called "one ahead."
This involves a force of some kind. We will assume you are using a Svengali deck with 8 clubs.
Ask the person to think of their mothers name.
Write "8 of clubs" on a piece of paper, fold it up and put it in a hat (or other container).
Ask what the name was, getting an assistant to write it on a board.
Ask another question, such as favourite colour.
Write the mothers maiden name on a piece of paper and put that in the hat.
Repeat this for a number of questions.
Finally, force the card. Get the person to think of the card while you write out the answer to the previous question (that has just been given to the assistant)

According to the magicians on the box, the only way to do this is you HAVE to know the person beforehand and then use trick photography while performing the stunt 'live' on the box.
The same technique is used to make airlines etc. disappear - it's just that - trickery!

One way is to have some lead/graphite under your finger nail and use it to write on a playing card, or something, behind your back as they are answering. Then magically show them the card and they assume it must have been written down prior to them telling you.

all the people who are "chosen" are actually choosen by the helper of the magician, he or she had a short converation just before the show, or had a glance into a purse so they know it all, and the magician, just chooses by the hints the helpers give him, he gets info through an earphone as well, or in advance the helpers tell him
