Personally, I think she was extremely rude and self-centered to do so. Refusing to face the very people you protest against sounds rather immature and arrogant. IF she had participated, she could have voiced her stance against racism, sexism, economic injustice, and homophobia in a way that COULD have spurred action. Now she's only a footnote in the history of 1997. I'm disapppointed that such an outspoken woman behaved so childishly by hiding to make a point, rather than standing tall.

She is quite admirable; she has also refused an invitation to the White House from President Bush. While I may not agree with her political stances; she stands by her convictions.
