they teach by association. probably "eat", "change", "hug", etc. Babies don't have motor skills to do any signs yet, but they'll remember, and do them when they are able.

They just teach them the basic sign language like eat, more, drink, some animals, sleep, play music, stuff like that the reason why they do this how it was explained to me is that they are finding and babies and toddlers are picking up and learning signs first before they talk and they have a better response by doing this there is studies done my son is 4 and has a moderate hearing problem and the speech therapist explained this that all babies and are taught this because of this reason and this does not cause any issues for them to talk this actually gets them talking quicker I hope this helps you but I think also it peeks their interest and gets their attention too.god bless..

Good Q.

Assume for a moment that a baby has a mind like a sponge,,,even if the attention span lasts only moments. They want to absorb what they experience, and usually do, without thinking about,,"Hmm what will this do for me?"

Infants/toddlers are also very tactile little people, usually learn by repetition, observation, interaction, and enjoyment in the experience.

Sign language taught to an infant, allows them a means to communicate, when they are yet unable to articulate. As adults,,,or parents,,,or teachers in an infant/baby environment, we respond to their sounds and actions,,,IE: "I'm hungry,,,I'm wet,,,I'm Tired,,,take care of that for me."

Sign language,,, on whatever level they "get it" taught as a means of association,,, affords them a new,,,second language, beyond just crying. A person who teaches infant sign language would probably use many of the same methods, as in teaching the adult deaf, but geared more toward simple, basic symbols/signs, to effectively respond to a baby, and resolve that childs issues.

nurseries are bad for babies, because separation from mommy lowers iq, increases anxiety and depression, lowers attachment to family, and family's approval of child. so, what they do is substandard at best. many people teach their kids to sign at home, very successfully, and they start at birth, just as spoken language begings being taught at birth.
