I could feel when I bought it. It was noisy like this.

How to clean it? I know it must be bearing noise, but I could not split it apart and clean it.

At school, my ear has to be very close to the computer case to hear the noise.

If you can't or won't buy a new fan then you might get a few months (or even years) more out of it by relubing the bearings.
Go to Tandy or Mr Smith's and get a little syringe unit with silicone lube in it (it's like oil but doesn't vaporise or attract as much dust) they have a nice thin non-spikey needle on the end and you should be able to poke it into or near the center of the fan an squeeze some in.
Very handy buggers to have around - for all sorts of things.

It probably needs to be cleaned. Go to anywhere that sells electronics and buy a can of compressed air for cleaning dust out of computers. Turn off you computer and take off the case and give the fan a series of blasts. If a bunch of dust sprays out

It might be that some of the screws that anchor your moitherboard to the computer case have come loose and are making the noise from the vibrations of the fan. BE CAREFUL! Screws should only be slightly snug. Don't overscrew or you might break the motherboard!

If those don't work, then the fan might be going bad.

If it sounds like the noise is inside the box it could be three things.

1) CPU fan
2) Video card fan
3) Hard drive

1) CPU
It means the bearing is shot in the fan and it'll have to be replaced soon. Cheap repair, easy to do yourself. It's shouldn't cost more than $15 for another fan.

If you are replacing it, don't forget to ground yourself with your static mat properly as you'll be touching the cpu and it doesn't take much static electricity to fry it.

2) Video card
Pain to replace. Easier just to buy a new video card and replace the old one.

Don't forget the static mat and grounding yourself

3) Hard drive
Sometimes the screws are a little lose on the harddrive bracket. Tighten them up a little and see if that clears it up.

NOW IF THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE COMPUTER.

It's the power supply. Dead easy to replace if you know what youare doing. It's also dead easy to cook your entire system if you don't calculate the proper power requirements of your box. It's just as easy to under power the system which is just as bad.

Best way to make the PS switch is to take the old one out carefully (grounded remember) and bring it to a good IT shop. Look for a guy with the most amount of stains on his shirt and ask him to get a replacement. The guy with the curry/chili/hamburger stains on his shirt is the alpha geek and will know exactly what you need. The young clean cut guy is the junior and usually jumps to stupid guesses and conclusions. (I'm actually looking at these guys in my shop right now and I'm getting the finger from both). :)

Well, they do create noise. At school we usually don't notice the noise because it's relatively small (compared to all humanly noise). In your room, where you stay alone, noises are more audible because the background noise is much smaller than at school.

OR

Try to clean the dust stuck in between the fan's blade. Perhaps they got into the motor too.

Because you bought it in 2004. Try cleaning it. Dirt might have entered the whole bushless motor part.

If this doesn't work, you could always buy a new one.
