Since you are asking for a specific maybe you should just take your car in and get it checked. The average is 40,000 miles but that is highly dependant on the type of driving that you do. If you do nothing but city it is constant stop and go - wears the pads out fast. If you have a manual tranny - downshifting makes the pads last much longer (could double the lifespan). If you ride the brakes you can wear them out in 12,000 miles.

Your brake pads have a metal gauge on the side, and once they wear down enough, that metal gauge rubs on the rotor, and your brakes squeal. It has it's own warning system basically. If the squeaking turns into grinding noise, then you're metal on metal, meaning your pads are GONE, and you'll need new rotors, AND pads. Unless you're lucky and can just get the rotors turned. This goes for any make and model of car that has disk brakes.
