Mother in law tongue plant is a common indoor plant. It has very long leaves that stick straight up from the dirt or pot and look sort of like a long spike, but they aren't hard or dangerous.

I think the plant is Sansaveria (sp). Usually dark green, tough long pointed leaves indoor plant-- I never thought about it as a rain forest plant-- but what do I know. They will live in low light and minimal water--
The century plant is an outdoor plant (at least in Oklahoma) that also has straight leaves that are also tough-- the leaves are gathered around the base and maybe on a longer stem-- they do bloom infrequently.
You might be thinking of a bromilad (sp). It does come from the rain forest and roots on branches of trees . There are many to be had for plant persons-- the most common I've seen is the Silver Vase-- green with silver leaves-- has a single spike of blooms that are bright pink and purple. They only bloom once then "calf"-- you then use the baby. If yours hasn't bloomed, you can stimulate blooming by use of a plastic bag and an apple-- put the apple in the "vase" part-- and cover the entire plant and pot with a plastic bag that is tightly closed. check frequently.
good luck

Mother-in-laws' tongue is a funny plant. It is also known as the century plant. My Mother had one that bloomes. She had it for years. They took her picture with the plant it was on front page local news paper. It is called century plant because it only blooms once every hundred years. !!!
