Hello. I have 5 years of business experience, however, I've never been too thrilled with my career choice. I decided to go back to school and am working on a masters degree in accounting. Well, I can't get anybody to hire me. Placement agencies say, "Come back when you have 3-5 years of accounting experience." How do I get experience without getting a job? I understand I cannot command as high a salary as I could in my previous life.....but I'm getting desperate that I'll be STUCK in my current career because I can't get anyone to give me a chance. Anyone have any advice?!?!? Resources?

I would continue your schooling, but while you are doing that keep looking. Try to look for entry-level positions or accounting jobs that may have an overlap with the experience you already have in business. The company may see the business side of you and may want to hire you for that, but you might be able to get some accounting experience in it as well. Also, you may talk to your supervisor and see if there might be tasks that you might be able to perform that would compliment accounting to start getting experience until you find something. I have found that a supervisors are good about trying to find the best productive spot for their employees. Since you have experience in business, when you go to an interview, try to tie in what you already know to what they are looking for (include what you are learning from going back to school as well). If you are unsure on what they are looking for, ask them. It's all about how you word things. Even if you may not have any or much experience in accounting, if you can tie in what you already know from your previous or present job, many places will see that as a great thing and be willing to train or at least show you the ropes. If you don't have a resume on careerbuilder or monster, I'd recommend to put one of there and see what you can find. I wish you the best of luck.

Right after I got my accounting degree many years ago I ran into the same problem. Then I got a job at a place that had 1 main office and 21 satellite offices. It was classified as a bookkeeper position but after I did the books for this business for a number of years I was able to get a good job as an accountant. I started during tax season because they really need help at that time of the year.

As I can completely understand the position that you are in I have done retail for almost 20 years and I went back to school for Electronics.
My suggestion is to go to a professional resume company and compile an outstanding cover letter and resume that reflects what you have done and what you are very capable of.
Your 5 years in business experience should not go to waste and should do nothing but help with the fact that you have dealt with people on all kinds of levels.
