Basically Asthma is a hereditary disease, which may be sometimes deadly, as per research done worldwide. Otherwise Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially at night and in the early morning. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives.
It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflamed in the first place. Your inflamed airways may be due to a combination of things. We know that if other people in your family have asthma, you are more likely to develop it. New research suggests that being exposed to things like tobacco smoke, infections, and some allergens early in your life may increase your chances of developing asthma.

So at 26 you need not worry much if you are careful and consult doctor in case of any serious problem.

To be honest, it can actually be almost anything. As you age your body constantly changes and you can become more susceptible to things you weren't as a child. Like someone could develop a random allergy to pet dander or something as simple as that as they get older.
Questions you need to ask yourself and tell your Dr. the answers to:
Did you recently move?
This may be an odd question, but you may have moved into a house/apt. with mold or mildew that could cause the asthma.
Have you noticed many insects in and around your home/apt.?
Insects can very easily cause illnesses which can affect your respiratory system causing asthma. So if you notice certain bugs around your house in large numbers, you may want to call an exterminator to come in and look around to see if you have an infestation.
Have you been exercising more regularly and frequently?
You can easily get Sports Induced Asthma at any age
Did you recently get a new pet?
You may be allergic to pet dander or the pet itself.

It's important to think about any changes you've had within the past 6 months before the diagnosis of your asthma. Make a list and be sure that you discuss some things with your Dr. It's important to keep them in the loop because they may notice odd things that could easily be affecting you. Go to the AAFA site I've linked for you below. They have more specific things to look at and give very good explanations to medical terms you may be hearing but not truly understanding.

Good luck and feel better!

what do each of these individuals have in common: first, an eighteen-year-old suddenly develops wheezing and shortness of breath whenvisiting his grandmother who happens to have a cat. second, a thirty year old woman has colds that "always go into her chest," causing coughing and difficulty breathing. lastly, a sixty- year-old man develops shortness of breathwith only slight exertion even though he has never smoked. the answer is that they all may have asthma.
these are some of the many faces of asthma.

asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. this narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators. between episodes, most patients feel fine. the disorder is a chronic (reoccurring) inflammatory condition in which the airways develop increased responsiveness to various stimuli, characterized by bronchial hyper-responsiveness, inflammation, increased mucus production, and intermittent airway obstruction. the symptoms of asthma, which can range from mild to life threatening, can usually be controlled with a combination of drugs and lifestyle changes.
public attention in the developed world has recently focused on asthma because of its rapidly increasing prevalence, affecting up to one in four urban children. susceptibility to asthma can be explained in part by genetic factors, but no clear pattern of inheritance has been found. asthma is a complex disease that is influenced by multiple genetic, developmental, and environmental factors, which interact to produce the overall condition.

A dusty house or the place where you work. Smoking or being around smoke,. barbeque grills, smoke from restaurants; etc. Someones cologne or perfume could even cause an attack. It has been so dry all over the U.S. latley. Moisture is scarce in our air. Plants are shrivleing up, just imagine what it is doing to our insides. We need moisture. Buy a vaporizer or humidifier. Leave it running while you are in your home or office. It will ad extra moisture to dry air and help you to breathe better.
