It a tiny little card that you plug into your GSM (Cingular, T-Mobile) phone. It specifies the information about you like your phone number as well as some technical info specifc to your carrier. Also, it has the capability to store your contacts and 9 text messages. It's nice to have a card like this because you can just pop it out and put it into your new phone, and you're ready to make calls. CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) use a serial number instead of SIM cards.

Its a smart card that stores all of the information from your cell phone. If you get a new phone you can remove the sim card from one phone and slide into another and it will work with all of the same account information.

It is the heart of your mobile phone. SIM cards gives a life to your mobile handset.
When you buy your handset, SIM card is not necessarily part of it.
You buy it from your preferred service provider like Air-tel, Hutch etc and insert it into our handset. When you do that successfully, your handset gets connected to mobile network..
