I would say a dog, but if your are someone that's loves to go out this choice is not the choice for you, dogs come from the line of wolves and wolves run in packs : dogs are the domesticated version of wolves so to them we are their pack and once we leavee to work or go out and leave them alone for long periods of time they become depressed and begin to destroy costly things.
A cat is a good choice for someone who wants a pet but does not have all the time to give it attention or take it out on walks. Cats are almost 80% more independent than dogs.
* If you are not looking for either campanion and just want some cute and furry to look at consider a hamster, ferret, bunny, or maybe even a chicken!!

Dogs need constant training for the first few months and they WILL poop and pee in your house. Kennel training is the ONLY way to go, trust me.

Cats are low maintenance but seem to need to go to the vet a lot. Be prepared for ear mites and UTIs. But they are easy to stay home alone, easy to litter box train. They will scratch up your furniture though.

Birds are great, low maintenance but if you don't hold them every day, two at the most, they won't let you hold them at all soon.

Ferrets STINK. All of them. After getting scent removed and being fixed and bathed only once a month they will still stink of musk. 100% and if anyone tells you different, they don't know or they don't want to admit their ferrets and they too smell musky. Plus you need to clean their poop, which is just like dog poop, every single day. They poop constantly.

Guniea pigs are low maintenance and stink way less than most critters. They love to be held, need little interaction but should have it every day if possible.

Rabbits are messy. Turtles stink. Lizards are way cool but get pretty dull after a few weeks.

To give you a good answer you need to give us your circumstances. Do you live in a house with a yard, can you pay to care for a pet, how old are you (at least if you're old enough to take on the responsibility to care for a pet), etc. More information would help a lot.

What kind of a person are you? Like to get exercise/spend lots of time at home/don't mind getting up early? Get a dog. If you're on the run/independant, but still need something warm at your feet at night, get a cat. If you don't want either, get a betta fish. They're pretty, don't die if you forget to feed them, and cheap to keep!
