Civic all the way. When my Civic was in the shop after being in a fender bender, I got a rental Corolla to drive for a few weeks. The first thing I noticed was the cheap plastic interior. Second thing was when I started driving it, it handled very poorly compared to the Civic. The Corolla squeeled like a pig when trying to make a turn that the Civic had no problem doing. The last thing I noticed was it made an aweful noise when accelerating to highway speeds. I thought the car was going to explode. It wasn't like I was flooring it either. It was so bad that it actually made me feel bad, as if i was torturing the poor car. I decided to park it at the mall to give it a rest. When I came back to the car there was like 3 other tan rental Corollas parked right beside mine so it took me a while to figure out which one was mine.
In conclusion the Corolla is just a rolling appliance. It really is one of the most boring cars I've ever driven. And the Civic isn't as bad as what other people here say. I never had a problem with mine ever. It was never in the shop other than regular tuning and for that one accident.

For years and years the Civic has been more stylish and modern looking but the Corolla has been more durable and has suffered fewer mechanical problems.
Civics are sold in different 'trim' levels each with a prechosen set of options and features. Corollas are sold as base cars with many options and options packages to decide on.
Basically it boils down to personal choice with one caveat. Right now Corollas can be haggled down about 1,000 or more from sticker while Civics are selling right at or sometimes even over sticker. So for now the Corolla is probably the better deal.
If you want style pick the Civic, value pick the Corolla.

They're both good choices, but they're aiming at slightly different markets. Corollas are softer and more on the comfy side while Civics are slightly sportier and more and the edgy side.
As a guy I'll pick a Civic time and time again, although I don't mind be driven in a Corolla, I just wouldn't drive one myself.

Funny you should ask... I have owned both. I have to say I like my Civic better, but never had one problem out of my Corolla. I think it would be what you like as far as apperance, because both of them are great cars and they both keep thier value so if you ever want to trade you are not upside down on it. Happy Buying.
