Men are looking for the literal (logical) content in most communication. Women process a great deal of emotional/non-verbal content. When women think we are not listening it is because we are taking the content at face value and missing the other cues.

My theory is that male brains are made to be specialists whereas female brains are "jack of all trades" type of brains which just use the whole brain rather than one part. You can have three people and in scenario one each one is carpenter/plumber/electrician and in scenario two all three are general "handyman" and in the end they all can do the same amount of work, but it takes all three to do anything big (build a house)
(a bit off topic)
I know. Poorly written but it's hard to convey the concept of specialization vs. diversification. That probably explains why this society is male dominated, since a specialist can do their specialty better than a more balanced but generic worker. Think brain surgeon vs. general practioner. (and the fact that humans are male dominant at sexual dimorphism, so it's only the lucky smart males that dominate, while the dumb ones get burned by the women). Back to the brains, women have more brain cells (which are memory cells) so women can remember more things than men, but men are able to use their reduced memory more efficiently at processing information.

The only time men listen with half their brain is when the women are going on and on about stuff we couldn't care less about.

Tell me something I do not know.
That's know for years.
There have been studies that women can hear multiple sounds and able to extract a particular voice or sound. this goes back to our primitive ancestors. This was used to distinguish between baby cry, and approaching dangers, and know the sounds of their family.
men's hearing and brain, was more developed for hunting, tracking, direction, logical thinking ( for hunting ) and defence, and less or speech recognition.
These traits were developed to ensure survival
