How to record / mic for computer?

I don't have a mic but is that what I need? What exactly am I looking for at the store? I want to be able to record for example, my son talking, into my desktop computer. What do I need to buy?

Buy any microphone (omni-directional, or uni-directional) that will plug into the mini microphone jack of your sound card. You can buy a cheap mic or spend a little bit more for one with background sound dampening which cuts out ambient noises.

That's a great idea to record your child's talking. Have you ever thought of getting a hand-held recording device? That way he won't have to be dragged to the computer when he doesn't want to be. You can merely take the device to him. And you can transfer what was recorded from that device to your computer at a later time.

You really have to think about what exactly you’ll be recording. If you need a microphone for voice recondition, you’d need a fairly good microphone the Plantronics DSP-500.

Otherwise, if you just want a microphone for everyday purposes, I’d just refer you to a local electronics dealer. For this purpose, a 10-30 dollar microphone should suffice.
