it was the californian.the captain went to bed,and the radio controller went to bed at midnight,so it was claimed they never saw titanics distress flares.the carpathia was the ship that responded to titanics radio calls, but she was so far away that by the time she got to titanic, most of the passengers had drowned.they picked up some people in lifeboats.cool trivia-the old lady that lives next door to my uncle, her parents were passengers on the carpathia, and they met when they were watching titanics rescues being taken aboard the carpathia !!!! look up titanic museum website in florida-its cool !!!!!ps-the other responders are incorrect, the CALIFORNIAN was the closest ship, but they didnt respond-the carpathia did,but she was 2 hours away !!!!!!( i played molly brown at the travelling titanic exhibit in raleigh,nc for 10 months)ps,again-bcause the californians radioman went to bed, thus missing the signals,a law was then passed tthat all ships radios be manned 24/7,so no more distress calls would ever be missed.

The California, when Titanic shot the flairs they only had whit not red, the California saw this and just thought they were celebrating the ships crossing, and the crew on the California went to sleep including the radio man but later learned they did receive the distress call but no one was at the radio, the sister ship heard it the Olympic but it was over 24 hour away the famous Marconi radio it was new at the time and very few ships had it, the carpathia received it and they were 4 hours and did the rescue and returned all survivors to The new York harbor the destination the titanic was going to but the only boats that made were the life boats there is a photo of the boats all parked in New York Harbor sad deal everything that could go wrong that night did go wrong very sad deal, good Question

Carpathia, radio operator went to bed, this passed a maritime law that all radio's on ships must be monitored 24/7, this law still holds true today, even on recreational vessels, although not enforced, I always have channel 16 (DISTRESS) on and monitored when I'm on the water, things happen faster than you think.
