Katie S: Take Wikipedia-referenced answers with a grain of salt.
I can tell you that it was on 8/1/81, as VH-1 Classic aired the original days of programming on 8/1/06 which was 25 years to the day of the first music video airing, which was only available at that time in parts of NJ. It didn't go nationwide until later.
And yes, 'Video Killed the Radio Star" was in fact the very first video.

The first music video aired on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. It aired on August 1st, 1980. You can take that to the bank. I'm a pop culture junkie and I know that's the right answer.

Video Killed the radio star.
But HBO played music videos between movies before MTV came on the air. The first I can recall is Bicycle Ride (by Queen I think)
