I can't receive sound anymore on our computer, can't play music or music videos, hear voices in chats, etc. We checked to make sure everything was still plugged in...now what?

Please, can you be more specific? I am not computer literate! (Where's my embarrassed smiley face when I need it?)

We've already tried rebooting, if that's what you mean by "use system restore."

The volume is not set to mute, and the speakers can't be shot, this computer is only a little more than a year old. (Dell)

Turn your speakers on? They were on for over a year, they just suddenly decide to turn themselves off?

Make sure your sound card drivers are correctly installed. Go to the Control Panel > System, click the Hardware tab and click Device Manager then see if there are any notifications under Sound, video and game controllers, if there is a yellow exclamation point then your driver for your sound card is not correctly installed. Reinstall the driver, however, Windows cannot tell you what sound card you have installed, unless the driver is installed. If you have made no changes to your computer, you can download the driver from the manufacturers site.

Check the sound drivers, enter to "my computer" properties, click the "hardware" tab, click the "device manager" button and then expand the "sound, video and game controllers" list. If there's an icon like an exclamation sign or something like that then there's a problem with drivers, if not, then it's something else. If it's a problem with drivers, right click the element that has the problem, enter to the properties, click the "drivers" tab and then click "roll back driver". Accept and close all windows and that should work.

One or two things could be wrong.
1) You have the volume on mute, and you can't hear anything
2) Your speakers are shot.

TURN ON YOUR SPEAKERS. This question is just like that other one asking "we can't see anything on the screen anymore... all the icons have disappeared what do we do?" You guys are too simple.
