Back in the 1960s, the Cuban government and the government of the Soviet Union, both communist regimes, were getting very close to each other. President Kennedy did not want a powerful communist country that close to the United States. In an attempt to keep Cuba from becoming too powerful, Kennedy imposed a trade embargo on Cuba. People in the US are not allowed to sell anything to Cuba and Americans are not allowed to purchase any Cuban goods, including Cuban cigars. On a rather ironic note, Kennedy had over 1000 boxes of his favorite Cubn cigar, H. Upmann, purchased for him, before he would sign the embargo order.

They are illegal because when Fidel Castro took over Cuba He made an Alliance with then USSR. At that point USA considered this a threat to national security since Cuba is so close to USA soil ( Florida is only 150 KM from Key West). So an Embargo was created , With this in place no US company cannot do business With Cuban companies.
Therefore, Cuba cigars became illegal in the USA.
I hope this explains it.

b/c the US banned everything from Cuba in the 50's when Castro took control of the country. It was a communist country with a strong dictator. The US blocked everything trying to change the Cuba views and power with a communist country so close to the US. It still, for the most part, still exist today.

They are only illegal in this country because we do not allow Cuban products into the USA. However, go to another country and you can smoke as many as you want! Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, etc.

If I'm not mistaken.......The United States band trading of specific items from Cuba because of earlier trade with Russia when they were considered to be a threat to Democracy and ultimately...it too is a communist country.
