A player will enter an event as an amateur so that they don't disqualify themselves from college tennis. Once a player starts collecting prize money they lose their NCAA eligibility and scholarships. That would be bad if they weren't good enough yet to compete at a professional level.

Since these tennis tournaments are "opens" the amateurs can get their feet wet and see if they have what it takes to play and be successful on the professional tour. They'll also gain some ranking points (but no money!). Obviously if an amateur player is consistently doing well they're going to quit school and turn pro if they want to pursue a tennis career.

Because that is actually the definition of an amateur player--one who does not play for prize money. Just as in other types of work, a professional is someone who gets paid.

Professional means you get paid to play. If you want to keep your armature status you can't accept money. It doesn't mean armatures are less capable.

Professionals play for money, tennis like other sports is his or her profession, it is their job.
