Actually, I'd go with the Compaq. My coworker says nothing but good things about his Compaq laptop.
As for Dell, I'm sure it's not too bad of a piece of equipment, but I've always heard bad stories about their help desk and how insane it is to replace parts if you don't have an extended warranty.

I would go with the Dell, but whichever is cheaper really. I have used the Evo and it's descent. I have never used the C600 though. Either way, if you want Windows XP, you should bump up the RAM to 512MB.

compaq, just to make your mind up phone dell customer support and make a story up about your dell product not working, and you'll see why most beople don't buy dell. or type into google. i hate $%^@ing dell, just to help you decide

I myself have had crappy support from both companies. However. if the specs are the same I guess I would look at the price. Who cares about the name.
