Relax! You can't expect to learn everything you need to in just a day or two. Everyone there has had a first day, week, etc. so they understand what you are going thru. Just be sure to pay attention when they show you how to do something.

There are four simple steps which can be expanded but for now these if followed will help you pretty soon groove in:
1. Find and get yourself on every communication line you will need in order to give and receive info regarding your new post.

2. Make yourself known along with your post title and duties to every person you will need to have contact with in your new role.

3. Find out from all these people what is needed and wanted from each of them.

4. Do, produce and present what is needed and wanted from each.

Follow these steps and provide what is needed in a concise, professional and easy to understand format and you won't go far wrong.

The first few days of a new job are always this way. Take notes, write down what they are telling you and showing you. Most people don't mind helping out, but after two or three days if you are doing the same thing, you should be able to do it on your own. WRITE IT DOWN. This is the most important advice I can give you.

That's the way it was for me whenever I worked a pooh job. It's funny- right now I work for the State budget office doing massively complex analyses and computer operations and doing great, but just 2 years ago while I was earning my Masters Degree I tried working at Dunkin Donuts and they thought I was a total idiot! They got frustrated that I couldn't learn everything in one day. There's a certain type of people that aren't really booksmart so they just feel their way through life by instinct, and they really expect others to do the same... and they do very well at their particular little job, but they're really incapable of explaining things well, they just expect you to "get it."

Perhaps you need to take notes. Keep a notepad and write little reminders for the things you get stuck on, and develop a cheat sheet you can refer to instead of relying on bugging your thin-skinned co-workers. :)

Don't apologize all the time either. Just act matter-of-fact. I agree that you need to keep a note pad and write things down such as the exact process you need to follow when performing a function on the computer. You shouldn't need to ask for help if you have it written down.

I agree relax. When you ask for help after the first time you have been shown something do you watch someone as they preform the task or do you try yourself? Let them watch you. You will remember better if your fingers are on the keyboard. Realize that you will make mistakes. Forgive yourself then go on DO NOT GIVE UP. Good luck
